3 Types of Fangirls

        In the Kpop Industry, I classify fans into three different types according to how they behave, act and deal with issues inside or outside the fandom society. The said types are the Normal Fans, Callow Fans and Crazy Sasaeng Fans. 

NORMAL FANS

    The normal fans are the ideal type of fans. They aren't troublemakers nor overly obsessed. They are the simplest and common type of fan. I consider myself as a normal fan tho. Their life is not fully centered on kpop alone but they may have other major concerns like studies, workshops, other fandoms and business. They stalk, update and spazz about kpop regulary but not too much. They are matured enough to understand showbiz issues and reacts accordingly. 

   They also like memorizing song lyrics and learning kpop dance choreography by covering a certain kpop song. They also study writing, reading and speaking Hangul in order to somehow perceive the intended meaning of what their idols or biases are trying to convey on talk shows, variety shows, dramas and music videos. Video clips showing their idols' humorous and childlike side make them gleeful too. They are also following every kpop artist's personal og group social networking accounts like facebook, twitter and instagram for them to stay updated.

  They are the cheerful and friendly type of fans. They love collecting albums and official/non-official kpop merchandise like posters, shirts and fashion accessories. They also create and read kpop or korean culture concerned blogs and fan fictions. These fans organize some get together activities for all kpop fans like anniversary celebration and celebration of the icons' birthdays. The normal fans also attend or dream to attend concerts and fan meetings while bringing some sign boards and official lightsticks. They scream and smile during the said events but not to the point of  getting wild. These fans can balance their responsibilities in their studies or jobs and their kpop interest.

   The second type of fans are the callow fans or the immature fans. These fans are the common group of bashers and suicidal fans for they take issues in a very serious and childish way. In short, they are the over acting ones. They are that sensitive fans who would hurt themselves by locking themselves in a room or by cutting their skin and worst do suicide just because of a certain issue concerning thier idols relationship status, lawsuits, attempts of leaving and common showbiz issues. They would also be deeply hurt whenever their idol got strain or hurt themselves while performing or practicing and would immediately bash the agency for not taking good care of the celebrities.

   They bash their fellow fans whom they think are luckier than them. The also create trouble by bashing new fans and other fandoms.They usually cry a lot whenever they get a chance to see their idols live like fan meetings and concerts. They even take fan fictions with earnest intent and reacts like fools. For the normal fans, they are oftenly the cause of fandom wars or misunderstandings for they interpret an affair in a without-analyzing manner and also for comparing a certain kgroup from another kgroup.

   Anyway, just like the normal ones, they also love collecting kpop merchandise too, but prefer more on the official and imported ones. They also enjoy watching their idol group's variety shows and music videos but then over reacts afterwards. I have friends who belongs to this type and I noticed that they find difficulty in balancing their school function and kpop for most of them almost failed in class but are very good in terms of updated issue about kpop.

     The last type of fans are the most interesting yet hilarious-somehow causing-anxiety fans, the sasaeng fans. They are the very obsessed ones that they even invade the privacy of their idols. They stalk too much and even follow wherever their idols go. I knew a group of sasaeng fans from Korea who would really book a flight that's the same with their idol's flight and would really spend much just to get that seat beside their idol's. They would also spend much in sending expensive fan gifts. They are hawk-eyed fans who easily see impurities and fault in their idols.

   These fans are crazy and scary. They often cause their idols' danger for they would really crash unto the latter whenever they would meet them. For normal fans, they are totally problems in the fandom. They would even set hidden cameras in their idols' dorms to create a bone of contention. They even know their idols' social security numbers and phone numbers. Their population is roughly increasing right now and that is really a head ache. 

  I've read a sasaeng fan's account and it was stated their that she would follow their private cars by taxi and would bring cameras with high definition lenses just to capture what their idols are doing. Somehow, I'm thankful to sasaengs because they are the ones who bring new updates and pictures but it is still not right. Another sasaeng fan account also showed how she was greatly affected by Luhan leaving EXO and cut her skin. There was also one sasaeng who posted that she was selling urine of a certain kpop star and claimed to have a certain idol's boxers with pubic hair. Some of them would also wait outside entertainment companies and would search for hair strands because they believed that it was their idols'. 

   These fans are really silly and major threats to the kpop artists. Instead of cheering and supporting, they are suffocating idols for their own pleasure. They would also throw under wears and condoms to their idols during concerts and fan meetings. I myself witnessed sasaeng fans who'd really rush into the airport and would cling to the idol's van or car and would shout their names in the peak of their voices. It's really annoying.

    Fans may be different in their way of upbringing but all in all, they are still fans who share the same goal of supporting and admiring talented and charming people. Therefore, each fan deserves respect and understanding for this is the kind of life which they chose as a path.

Sneak Peak to my KPOP Fan-girl Lifestyle

       Nobody said fangirling was easy. Once you get started and have this path as a choice, there's no turning back, because i tell you, leaving is really difficult. Fangirling is not just a source of entertainment for me, it somehow became part of my lifestyle. It actually added colors to my life to the point that boredom had no place in my day. 

The main reason why i love kpop is because the artists really worked hard for the success and fame they have right now. They auditioned and were qualified because of their amazing talents and charm. They trained for 2-10 years before they could debut as a kpop star to ensure that they are really prepared. The process of kpop stardom was never uncomplicated, thus, these artists who made it really deserved to be admired. Also, most kpop songs really have sense in terms of lyrics and meaning, plus the pleasant tune or beat of their music.

     

      I started appreciating Korean pop and Korean dramas as early at the age of 11, when I was in Grade 6. At that time, I only knew a few and common artists/bands like Super Junior, SNSD, Wonder Girls, 2NE1, SS501, Go Hye Sun, Lee Min Ho etc. I enjoyed the genre of their music and the amazing plot twists of their dramas but I'm not very much into it yet. It was just a sideline amusement.

      During highschool, I stayed in a dormitory school directed by nuns. We were not allowed to spend nights by just watching movies or searching about stuff which weren't academically related. Our study time schedule was being controlled, so I was really outdated due to some projects and strict rules. I can only watch korean dramas during weekends, if not busy and have no time in stalking, checking my SNS acounts or watching new kpop music videos, music shows and debuts. This caused me to develop lesser interest with kpop and payed more attention to my acads and vocational courses. 

    We graduated December 11, 2013 because we have a different curriculum, thus, I had 7 months vacation due to the academic shift in UP. The first month after commencement was really monotonous, so I decided to divert my attention back to kpop. I watched new music videos and got really attracted to those new artists' talents, charms, and humor. They were so amazing that I can't stop watching more of their videos again and again. Hence, my fangirl feels emerged anew.

    My first fandoms included EXO-L (EXO), ARMY (BTS), BESTFRIEND (BOYFRIEND), AGASE (GOT7), BLACKJACK (2NE1) and SONE (SNSD). From then on, I started stalking, spazzing and updating about them. I followed their official social networking accounts and spent more than half of the day watching their variety or reality shows, music videos and live performances. I spent most days sitting in front of the computer squeeling, laughing and emoting alone. It may be weird but i was happy with what I was doing . I can't afford to miss even a single show with my bias (favorite artist) as a guest, thus, like EXO, i really watch all the episodes or versions.

  I tried to memorize their songs and dance steps. I even had online Korean Language lessons so that I could easily understand and appreciate more their songs and shows. Now, I can already speak some Korean greetings or sentences and could even read and write basic Hangul. Familiarizing the lyrics and dance steps of their musical pieces also became easy. I then started to collect the group's official and non-official merchandises like albums, posters, pins, fandom shirts, lanyard, lightsticks, fandom masks , photo cards/stickers etc. My phone, tablet and computer galleries are full of my favorite korean artists' photos and videos.

         All my social media accounts like facebook, twitter, instagram, youtube and tumblr are until now,  full of kpop stuff, pictures, updates and posts by my kpop friends and famous kpop spazzers.  Also, because of kpop, I've met a lot of amazing people and many new friends for I also attend some kpop events in Cebu like CKS, CKIH, HallyuCon, K-fest and Fandom events. In fact, most of my close friends are kpop fans too.

     My style of dressing up also changed because of kpop.  I prefer more of a cute style over a sexy and bitchy upbringing. I even joined cover groups (PSH and CHIKSERR) and korean entertainment auditions (Kwin and Kim Entertainment Auditions) for becoming a kpop idol trainee because of much influence. Because of kpop, i also dreamt of being a kpop star, although that's not my biggest ambition but I am a bit interested tho. Yes, it's totally weird but it would be the easiest way to meet your bias whom you've been longing to see.

     I also read and create fan fictions online. Also, kpop is the reason why i'm not interested in love relationships between opposite sex cause I'm too busy having concern about my imaginary boyfriends. Kpop raised my standards so high that I'll probably be forever alone.

     Another reason why I like kpop because they are childlike, fresh, light and natural. Their variety shows are really funny and definitely very cute. I also like the beat of their music and the language itself. Also, they are more of talent plus looks as a bonus but are really focused on a person's natural potential. I love Korea but I'm a proud Filipino. 

        As of now, Kpop is not just a thing for me but a part of me. It brightens my mood in times of stress and makes living surprising and vast. I have this time management in order not for my student and fangirl life clash. I still spazz but I make it sure that I study all my lessons and make assignments first. Kpop takes part during my free times. 

         Fangirling may seem weird but indeed, the experience is worth sharing!

Fangirl Vocabulary

Fangirls live in their own kind of world and because of that, they also have their own vocabulary in which other people cannot completely understand.

These words served as the trademark of fangirls. When you hear someone speaking using these words, it means, they are into kpop. These terminologies may seem hard for newbies but for fangirls, these are just one of the basic things.

So here are some examples of these alien words that every kpop fan knew or should know. Welcome to the Fangirls' Dictionary!

 -anyeong - it means "hi" or "hello" or "how are you?" or simply a form of polite greeting.

 -aegyo - it means showing super cuteness. Doing any acts that will emphasize one's cuteness like sweetly blinking while doing the peace sign, smiling gently with those puppy eyes and sweetly clinging to another's arm with an endearing smile. The best example for this is the Gwiyomi song.

  -daebak - this expression is the same as the common expression, "wow"! Fangirls use this to emphasize amazement. This can also mean, "the best" or "thumbs up".

 Example: "Omg they're so good, daebak!"

  -saranghae - this means "i love you" or the word used for expressing love.

 Example: "Saranghae Jeon Jungkook <3 "

  -kamsa -this means "thank you" or for showing appreciation. It's actually a shortcut for "kamsahamnida" which is "thank you" in korean language.

 Example: "Is this for me? oh kamsa!"

   -jinja - this means "really?' or "seriously?" or used to express doubt. 

Example: "Jessica is leaving SNSD, jinja?"

  -saeng -this word is used to call people who are younger than you. It came from the korean word "dongsaeng" which means younger brother or sister.

Example: "How are you saeng?"

  -unnie -this is used to call a girl who is older than you or in short, "older sister or "ate" in Filipino"

  -oppa -the word used when calling an man older than you. this may apply to your brother or boyfriend. Take note, "father" is not "oppa" it is "appa".

Example: "Hello oppa! Saranghaeyo."

  -hul -this may look awkward but it means being speechless because the topic is quite embarrassing or something which is not good.

  -maknae- this is referring to the youngest member in the group. If you are the one with the least age then you are the maknae.

  -ulzzang- this word refers to people with ashtonishing beauty. If you are gorgeous looking then, you are an ulzzang.

  -omo -this word serves as a replacement to the expression "OMG". 

Example: "Omo, this is so yummy!"

  -selca -instead of the word "selfie", fangirls use the word "selca"

  -minnat -this means "bare face" or simply a term used to describe a face without make-up

  -dongan -it is used to describe someone who has a "baby face"

  -comeback -this word implies that a certain group is releasing a new album and a new single. 

Example: "EXO will be making a comeback showcase in Inkigayo(a music show) on October 24, 2014." It means that EXO will be releasing their new single or album.

  -bias -this refers to the member of a certain group whom you like most.

Example: "I like BTS, and my bias is Jeon Jungkook." It means that among all the memebers of BTS, i like Jeon Jungkook the most.

 -yehet- this term expresses excitement, it;s the same as saying "yehey" but the way it is said and the intonation differs.

 -ohorat -this expression is used to show that you are okay.

 -mianhe -this word is used when asking apology.

Example: "I broke your ruler, mianhe unnie."

 -chaebol -this means filthy rich and super influencial.

 -fanchants -this are chants which fans utter during concerts to show support to the group.

Example: "Jigeomun So Nyu Shi Dae! x3"

 -aish -used an expression showing anger.

 -aigoo- expression used when your being bothered, worried or hurt.

Example: "I have colds, aigoo."

-debut -this term refers to the first performance of an idol/ group on stage which would be televised.

Example: After 3 years of training, PSH will already have their debut."

 -kkaebsong -this expression is used when you are sad or when you feel down.

Example: "She failed the exam, ah kkaebsong."

 -ne -it used to express agreement

Example: "Is that your sister?" You: "Ne!"

 -anio -used to express negation and contrast.

Example: "Anio, your wrong, she is not pretty."

These are just some basic words which fangirls commonly use. At first it may seem hard to remember but after a long time this would likely become normal to you. This is actually a skill, a multilingual skill. If you want to continue with the kpop world, these words will be so useful.

Fangirling Is?

kpop fangirl - A female who is obsessed with either korean actor or kpop groups or korean celebrities . Similar to the breed of fanboy. Have been known to glomp, grope, and tackle when encountering said obsessions.

"Fangirling" is a term used to describe extreme excitement over a certain fandom. It's not just a for entertainment purposes but particularly, a choice that will soon change your life style.

It's very difficult to describe what fangirling really means unless you've been into such. In order to have its sense thoroughly conveyed, read and imagine the following scenes.

-" You are surfing the net. You opened your favorite social networking sites which are facebook and twitter. As you scroll the news feed down, you saw a photo teaser of a new kpop idol or group which will debut, or else release an album or have a concert and fan meeting. You were star struck with the members and their concept. It's the first time you've seen that picture but it made a great impact on your mind. Then you develop this feels for them. You become curious and opened google and then try to gather some information for specific purposes.

    After that research, you noticed a video link of their music video teaser. As you were watching, you were having shortness of breath, fainting, high pitched noises, shaking, fierce handshaking, wet panties and developed attraction to them. After watching, you were really amazed and can't stop watching it over and over again. Then, the stalking continues. " This shows that you are in the interested stage going to the starstruck stage.

-" You told your friends about it like the way it felt to fall in love with these gorgeous creatures. To your surprise, your friends also knew and like them too. Then you start to exchange thoughts and have a conversation in which the topic only circulates on that particular k idol or group. Then you start wasting unlimited time stalking, arguing, discussing, ogling etc. the object of your "fondness". Then every time you meet, most of your topics will be all about them and what's new. Also, you can't stop squealing.        
    After days, you start to be in the denial stage wherein you would often face the computer, talk to your idol and say "Oh my god! You don't exist. No, stop making me fall in love with you. Hey wait, marry me, i want babies. Why you gonna be so hot? No, I'm not crazy but wait oh my goodness stop being gorgeous i hate you for letting me fall with you and for not knowing me! C'mon, this is enough!" But then you start stalking and updating again again. This the weird yet hilarious side of fangirling.

I definitely have been there, yes you heard it right, I'm a fanatic, specifically a KPOP fangirl. The reason why I made this blog is to share all the craziness, surprises and escapades, benefits and stumbling blocks of fangirling. It's actually a distinct stuff like it changes the way you live your life. Once entered, moving out is onerous. It's something notable, something both exuberant and forlorn , something weird, absolutely unusual for normal people.
